I loved her then

and I'll love her the same

even if she can't

remember my name.
For those of you who don't know (which I hope is very few at most), Alzheimer's disease destroys one's mental functions one by one at an agonizing rate.

I have not known any one with Alzheimer's, but I have seen and heard the stories of loved ones whose happiness was shattered by this dreadful blight.

I've also heard tales of those who, despite being forgotten, don't give up on their deteriorating partners and stay by their side until they eventually pass on.

This is lovely in a sad sort of way. I did actually know someone who had Alzheimer's, so I've seen how sad it can be first hand and this really does embody the love his wife showed and how she stayed by his side until the day he eventually passed. They're together now, though, which is one of those happy-sad things.

This is so sad and lovely. I think this piece is powerful and short.

My father is currently afflicted by this disease, and it is just as horrible as it sounds. An Oxford graduate reduced to a shell of a man who must be reminded of his sons' names.... It's painful. My heart goes out to those who share the same struggle.
